Wildfire Risk in the WUI: Assessment & Mitigation

The EERI UNR Student Chapter successfully hosted an engaging Friday Seminar on April 11th, 2025, featuring Michele Barbato, Professor at UC Davis and Director of the UCD Climate Adaptation Research Center. Held online via Zoom, the seminar focused on the assessment and mitigation of wildfire risk for homes in wildland-urban interface (WUI) areas. Dr. Barbato emphasized the importance of using multiple sources of data to accurately assess wildfire risk and highlighted the urgent need to reduce overall risk in order to address the intertwined wildfire, housing, and insurance crises. He also introduced innovative resilience strategies, including the use of earthen construction, offering valuable insights into how data-driven approaches and alternative building methods can shape a more wildfire-resilient future.
